Free Cardiac Screening for Ages 5-25

Time/Date Is TBD

The Madison McCarthy Cardiac Care is excited to share a wonderful opportunity being offered to your child (ages 5-20) at the Jeffery B. Scott Memorial Hockey Tournament.  The screening is free of charge and will take place during the hours of 3pm-8pm.  All that is needed to participate is a signed Participation Agreement form and a Heart Healthy Survey.

The screening will include:

  • > Heart Health Survey
    > Blood Pressure
    > Physical Heart Examination
    > Electrocardiogram (EKG)
    > Echocardiogram (ECHO) if medically indicated.

While the prevailing perception is that heart disease is primarily an adult disease, there are thousands of seemingly healthy youth who suddenly and unexpectedly suffer fatal or severely debilitating consequences due to undetected heart conditions.

Madison McCarthy Cardiac Care advocates for heart screenings in youth for the early detection of risk factors and conditions associated with sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).  Most heart conditions that can lead to SCA are not detectable with a stethoscope.  Many heart conditions can be detected with simple, noninvasive and painless tests, a comprehensive review of personal and family heart history and the proper assessment and follow-up of warning signs and symptoms, if any.

As children grow their hearts change and repeated evaluations are often needed.  If a child is diagnosed with a heart condition, there are many precautionary steps that can be taken to prevent the likely outcome of SCA including lifestyle modifications, medication, surgical treatments, and implanting of a pacemaker and/or implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD).
